  • Birthmark

    Birthmark

    Birthmark

    What are birthmarks?
There are two basic types of birthmarks. Red or vascular birthmarks are most commonly seen, and are caused by an irregularity in the blood vessels. These include port wine stains and hemangiomas. Pigmented birthmarks, known as nevus (singular) or nevi (plural), are brown in color and are often less pronounced. Many birthmarks fade away before children reach school age, but they may remain and undergo changes over time.

How are birthmarks removed by lasers?
Pigmented birthmarks or lesions are best treated with Q-switched lasers. The laser emits the light in pulses meaning that the heat in the blood is diffused without damaging the surrounding tissues. The heated blood will then congeal and the vessels will atrophy leaving a lightened coloring.
Vascular birthmarks like portwine stain are best treated with V beam lasers. The V-beam laser treatment delivers an intense but gentle burst of light to the skin. The light is absorbed by the blood vessels. When blood vessels absorb the energy of the laser, they are forced to seal and close off which effectively eliminates the lesion.

How many treatment sessions will it take to remove the birthmark?
The time taken for each session will depend on the size and extent of the birthmark and a session can be several minutes or several hours long. Portwine stain requires more intensive laser treatments. In a single session, it is possible to see dramatic results, although several treatments spaced apart by several months will probably be needed.
Overall, laser treatment can dramatically fade or remove birthmark stains with virtually no scarring.

    Is the laser treatment painful?
The treatment is nearly painless and usually requires no anaesthetic. Only a slight tingling sensation is usually felt. A chilled gel applied to the skin and an optional topical anaesthetic prevent discomfort. Patients must wear protective eyewear to shield their eyes from the therapeutic flashes of light.

  • Hypertrophic Scars

    Hypertrophic Scars

    Hypertrophic Scars

    What is a Scar?
Scar is a permanent mark resulting from the process of healing of any breach in continuity of full thickness of skin. Injury to superficial part of skin may heal without scarring.

    What is a “Hypertrophic Scar”?
These scars are the result of excessive healing process and are raised above the level of surrounding skin, reddish in color and may be painful to pressure

    What is a “Keloid”?
Keloid is a much more aggressive scar than hypertrophic scar. It is grossly elevated and tends to spread and also involve the surrounding normal skin. Itching in the Keloid is common.

How Hypertrophic Scar Differs from Keloid?
Hypertrophic Scar does not spread to surrounding normal skin while the Keloids spread. Hypertrophic scar usually shows an eventual tendency to regress spontaneously after 6-12 months of its formation. In Keloid, there is no such tendency to spontaneous regression.

Any role of age, sex, race and site in development of scars?
Scars in children, generally remains harder and redder for longer than in adults, & the end result is poorer. More wrinkled the skin, more rapidly the scar settles & the better is its final appearance. There is no sex & race predilection for hypertrophic scars but Keloids are more common in females and brown or black skin population. Most common sites for Keloids are pre-sternal (anterior chest midline) area, shoulder and ear lobes and for hypertrophic scars flexor aspects of the body

Is it possible to eliminate the scar completely?
No, once the scar is formed it may remain for ever, though it can be improved with the treatment and may becomes almost invisible.

  • Nevus of Ota

    Nevus of Ota

    Nevus of Ota

    What is Nevus of Ota?
Nevus of Ota is a benign bluish or gray-brown lesion of the eye and the surrounding skin.

What are the traditional methods of treatment?
Treatments have included surgical removal, skin grafting, dermabrasion, and cryotherapy. Surgical treatment causes scarring, and cryotherapy, although it may be somewhat effective depending on the site of the lesion, is not reliable and may cause atrophy or scarring if overapplied.

How is Nevus of Ota treated with lasers?
Q Switch Nd YAG Laser is used to treat Nevus of Ota effectively. Dermal tissue in nevi of Ota contains large amounts of melanin, which provides an excellent target for the laser. The Q-switched Nd: YAG laser can produce very short high-energy pulses and can selectively target cells that contain pigment. It causes selective destruction of pigmented cells, with negligible damage to surrounding tissues.
Patients are treated either without anesthesia or with topical anesthesia. During all treatment sessions, the eyes of the patients and the clinical staff are protected. Gradual lightening of the lesions is usually evident after two or three laser treatments. The treatment intervals range from three to four months.

What Post treatment care is required?
There is a possibility of post treatment hyper-pigmentation. The effective strategies to prevent postoperative hyper-pigmentation is to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, routinely to wear sunscreen cream, and to apply topical hydroquinone early, preferably commencing a few days after treatment

  • Photorejuvenation

    Photorejuvenation

    Photorejuvenation

    What is photorejuvenation (Laser Facial)?
It is non ablative (bruise – free) process using intense pulse light (IPL) laser, causing fresher, younger looking skin. Broad spectrum light in the visible and infrared range, between 550nm upto 950nm, penetrates the skin layer and stimulates connective tissue growth, which is responsible for tonning of the skin.

For which conditions photorejuvenation is useful?

    • Sun damaged skin with fine wrinkles
    • Broken facial capillaries
    • Visible blood vessels
    • Age spots
    • Rosasea
    • Lack of glow
    • Discoloration & pigmentation

Which part of the body can be photorejuvenated?
Photorejuvenation is usually done for face, neck and upper breast portions of body but any part of body can be photorejuvenated.

What are the advantages of photorejuvenation?
Photorejuvenation erases skin damage with no “downtime” & it can simultaneously treat different facial changes ranging from sun damage to broken facial capillaries to discoloration & pigmentation changes.

    Tattoos

    Tattoos

While tattoos were once considered permanent, it is now possible to remove them with treatments, fully or partially. Pre-laser tattoo removal methods include dermabrasion, salabrasion (scrubbing the skin with salt), cryosurgery, and excision. Today, laser tattoo removal usually refers to the non-invasive removal of tattoo pigments using Q-switched lasers.

How do lasers work in Tattoo Removal?
Lasers emit energy that passes into the skin and is absorbed by a specific color ink in the tattoo, and breaks it down. This broken down ink is gradually removed by the body’s natural filtering systems thus mimicking the natural fading that time or sun exposure would create.

How many treatment sessions will it take to remove the tattoo?
Professional tattoos, on average, require eight to fifteen or more treatments, while amateur tattoos require four or more sessions due to the different composition of inks.
Treatments are spaced approximately six to eight weeks apart.

Do all colours of ink disappear equally well?
No, dark (blue/black) inks and red inks fade the best. Oranges and purples usually respond well. Green and yellow inks are a little difficult to remove, although additional treatments can produce significant fading.

    Will the tattoo completely disappear?
Greater than 95% fading of the tattoo may be accomplished. However, not knowing which tattoo ink, how deep or how much was used, makes it difficult for the physician to predict the degree of removal on any given tattoo.

What type of post-treatment care is necessary?
Occasionally there will be pinpoint bleeding associated with the treatment. An antibacterial ointment and a dressing will be applied to the area. The treated area should be kept clean with continued application of any ointment given to you by your physician. While bathing, the treated area should not be scrubbed.

  • Unwanted Hair Removal

    Unwanted Hair Removal

    Unwanted Hair Removal

    What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser Hair Removal is a non-invasive light therapy device specifically designed to eliminate unwanted hair from all parts of the body.

How does Laser HR remove hair?
Laser hair removal works by passing a beam of light through the skin. The laser targets dark pigment called melanin in the hair. When the beam strikes the hair follicle (the area that causes hair growth), the intense heat destroys the hair follicle instantly. Thus in a flash, pulses of light safely penetrate the skin and effectively treat hundreds of hair follicles simultaneously.

Can all hair colours and parts of the body be treated?
Laser HR can remove all hair colours except white from all parts of the body.

How does Laser HR treatment feel?
When Laser HR pulse of light is delivered to the hair, you may feel a mild sting or pinch similar to the snap of a stretched rubber band.

    How many treatments are required?
The number of sessions depends on various parameters, including the area of the body treated, skin colour, coarseness of hair and sex of the client. Several treatments may be needed, with each session usually lasting 10-30 minutes.

    Are there any side effects?
There are no side effects of Laser Hair Removal.

Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?
You can return to work the same day and resume all regular activities.

Are there any precautions to be taken post treatment?
You should limit sun exposure and use sun screen creams in between treatments.

How does Laser HR compare with commonly used hair removal methods?
Shaving, waxing and depilatory creams are all temporary methods that need to be repeated on a regular basis. Hair removal with Laser HR offers longer lasting and permanent results.

  • Varicose Veins

    Varicose Veins

    Varicose Veins

    What is Varicose Vein?
Varicose vein is twisted, enlarged & deformed vein and can occur on any part. Varicose veins occur most often in the legs, where it is under the skin.

    What are the Causes?
The likelihood of varicosity also increases as veins weaken with age. Contrary to popular belief, sitting with crossed legs will not cause varicose veins, although it can aggravate an existing condition.

How can a varicose vein be confirmed?
Duplex ultrasound colour doppler is the most commonly used, noninvasive test. It has the ability to know which veins have abnormal valves and their exact location in the leg. This allows the surgeon to plan accurate treatment.

Are there any complications associated with varicose veins that I should know about?
Yes. Something called Venous Insufficiency, The term refers to the changes in pressures of the venous system and varicose veins leading to permanent changes in the skin and subcutaneous tissues of the lower legs. These changes include itchy and irritable skin; tiny blue venules and discoloration of the skin around ankles; and hardening and loss of flexibility of the skin, called Lipodermatosclerosis, which can lead to ulceration that takes months to heal.

    What is Laser therapy?
Endovenous laser treatment of varicose veins was originally started in Spain, & is now a popularly accepted method of closure of Varicosities without surgery. It is US FDA approved. The procedure involves using a 980 nm or 808 nm Diode portable laser, and delivers energy which is selectively absorbed by the water and haemoglobin in the vein, causing instant thrombosis, and closure. Since the heat energy generated is mainly confined to the vessel, there is no damage to the surrounding structures.
