The Role of Liposuction in Tummy Tuck Procedure

Motherhood is a blessing that changes your life as well as your body shape. One gains extra weight, fat, skin will sags especially in the tummy area. This is where a Tummy Tuck can help you to regain your old shape and get rid of all your extra fat and sagging skin.

    More about Tummy Tuck:

Tummy Tuck also popularly known as abdominoplasty is a widely and successfully practiced cosmetic surgery process. It surgically removes excess skin and fat and in some cases restores weakened and separated abdominal muscles thereby creating a flatter and firmer abdominal profile.

    The Tummy Tuck procedure:

Traditionally, abdominoplasty did not include liposuction. In recent times, however, liposuction has become an inherent part of the tummy tuck procedure. Lipo-abdominoplasty helps create a better abdominal profile and removes abdominal fat permanently thereby negating its recurrence. It includes blocked excision of skin and hence there is no undermining. Thus it results in no vascular compromise for the lower abdominal skin.

Liposuction is performed first to remove excess fat from the entire abdominal region and flanks. Then in the same sitting, sagging or overhanging skin and tissues are removed through skin excision.

This procedure is also known as Lipo-abdominoplasty.

Types of Tummy Tuck and Role of Liposuction:

Just like any other procedure, there are also various kinds of Tummy Tuck procedure which all are applicable for different cases.

    • Traditional Tummy Tucks: This is the most widely performed type of tummy tuck surgery. This involves the hip-to-hip incision, as well as incisions around the belly button. Because they address the patient’s entire abdominal area, they often end up moving the skin around the belly button as well.

Traditional tummy tucks are vastly combined with abdominal liposuction (lipo-abdominoplasty). The candidates having excess fat as well as loose skin undergoes liposuction first for removing the excess fat followed by skin excision.

    • Mini Tummy Tucks: Mini tummy tucks are focused for patients who are within 10 percent of their ideal body weight and are want to make changes only to the part of the abdomen below the navel. When skin laxity is primarily in the lower part, then the skin above the belly button does not require mobilization. Mini tummy tucks require only a single small surgical cut made in the skin.

There are times when this Process is combined with Liposuction to removing extra fat and then tighten the skin accordingly.

    • Extended Tummy Tucks: This process involves the cutting out ‘love handles’ on both sides of the waist as well as the extraction of fat and excess skin from the stomach area. The cut is usually low so that even if the scar extends behind the hips, it will not be noticeable, even if one is wearing low-waist clothing.
    • Circumferential Tummy Tucks: In this procedure, the incision extends around the entire abdomen and lower back. It helps in lifting the buttocks and tightening the lower back skin as well.

It is essential to consult with our qualified Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeons before undergoing this procedure.

One of the reasons why I am scared of getting pregnant is the tendency to get sagging skin. However, I still consider conceiving my own baby. I am grateful that there is a surgery for this condition. It’s good news for me that not only it removes excess fat and skin, but it can also restore the abdominal muscles to its original state. Thanks!

I’m glad you mentioned that an option such as a mini tummy tuck is possible if the patient is within 10 percent of their body weight. My wife just gave birth weeks ago and is quite conscious when it comes to her abdominal area. I will pass on this information so that she knows the options that she can take to improve her tummy. Thanks for this information!

I appreciate how you said that a tummy tuck involves incisions. I also like how you said that gets rid of fat that you don’t want. My sister is looking to get a tummy tuck to look skinnier.

I found it interesting when you said that sagging or overhanging skin and tissues are removed through skin excision. My best friend is not giving birth yet, but her tummy looks like she had one. This happened due to long sitting at work. Maybe this could help her in eliminating those sagging belly!
